Starting as a community of punk kids, street dwellers, and marginalized youth seeking to learn about religion, this movement has evolved into a unique Islamic boarding school for urban Muslims. It serves not only as a spiritual rehabilitation center for drug addicts but also as a space for socio-economic empowerment and artistic expression among the marginalized. Established in 2012, the institution has embraced more than 500 punk and street youth over the years. Sufism and psychotherapy form the core approaches of its founder and caretaker, Halim Ambiya. The Tasawuf Underground students use music not only as a means of expression but also as a form of therapy and learning. Many of them memorize and study classical Arabic texts accompanied by music. Even their theater practices are not merely for performance, but as exercises in nurturing the soul, the mind, and emotional depth.
