Becoming and Expanding the Circle

“Becoming” and “Expanding the Circle” — these are the two key ideas guiding this year’s Madani Festival.

“Becoming,” a concept from Existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, was reinterpreted by the Iranian thinker Ali Shariati as Insan Kamil — the complete human in continuous journey toward God. It speaks of an unending process of growth, transformation, and striving for the Divine Perfection.

“Expanding the Circle,” meanwhile, comes from ethicist Peter Singer, who calls for widening our circle of moral concern to embrace all living beings that share this planet.

In this year’s Madani, we continue becoming. We are transforming — from a film festival into a festival of culture, and from a festival into a movement.

This movement brings together more collaborators who share Madani’s vision and mission. As always, we are expanding the circle — beyond cinephiles and film lovers, toward everyone engaged in shaping Muslim cultures.

All these flow into our four interwoven dimensions: Living Islam, Civic, City, and Civilization.

Let us collaborate.
Let us celebrate.
Let us move together.
