Curatorial synopsis
Indonesian cinema has traversed several cycles of collapse and rebirth, including during the New Order era. To consolidate its constructed version of national history, the New Order regime produced a series of large-scale propaganda films, while heavy censorship fostered apolitical popular cinema—though a few still carried subversive undertones. Several of these works were subsequently institutionalized as mandatory viewing in schools and broadcast annually on national television, embedding the state-sanctioned historical narrative into the public imagination.
